Best time to visit the Amalfi Coast

The best time to visit the Amalfi Coast is generally outside July and August, when summer crowds and heat dissipate. You'll find wild orchids in spring, but Easter week can be crowded. Walking is delightful in spring and autumn and definitely our top way to experience this stretch of coastline – meeting fishermen and shepherds along the way, and foraging for your own chestnuts and mushrooms. Best time to visit the Amalfi coast

On most beaches the sun dips behind the Bay of Sorrento after 3pm. So make sure you get your dose of sunbathing in during the morning.

The best time to visit the Amalfi Coast is outside July-Aug, its busiest and hottest months, often above 30°C. Walkers favour spring or autumn, although elevated hiking trails are cooler and crowd free. Trails are lined with orchids and herbs in spring, with temperatures around 16°C in March and 24°C in May, but evenings are cool and you’ll need raingear. Easter week is packed with religious festival goers, but the streets are almost empty Oct-Nov, and mild at 17-20°C. With daily highs of 13°C in winter, you can get out and about, though many hotels and ferry services shut after Oct.

When to go to the Amalfi coast, month by month

If you want to catch the lemon season, the trees produce fruit throughout the year, but the main harvesting takes place between March and late July, with another harvest in autumn. Amalfi town is very busy during July and August, and not helped by giant cruise ships bruising their way into town. They dock here in April and keep on coming until the end of October. Check their timetables at the Cruise Timetables website to avoid the mass disembarkation in Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento. The exact time varies of course, but for the most part the sun dips behind the Bay of Sorrento after 3pm. Sun worshippers are best to head beach side in the morning for that reason. It disappears a bit later at Amalfi, Maiori, Vietri sul Mare and Praiano beaches. Praiano is about the only one where you can catch the sunset. If you are in Sorrento in April, check out Incontri del Cinema Film Festival. It’s Cannes with an Italian twist. The village of Cetara is the only town on the Amalfi coast that still has a commercial fishing fleet and it is famous for its tuna and anchovies. Le Giornate del Pesce Azzurro, or Days of the Blue Fish, is one big fish fests, held during the first week of August. If you want to travel to Capri in March check your Easter dates, because ferries from Positano and Amalfi to Capri often only begin around Easter time. However, ferries from Naples and Sorrento run all year round. There is a limited service on 25 December and 1 January. Amalfi town residents celebrate Sant'Andrea, the town's patron saint and protector of fishermen with a festival on both 27 June and 30 November. Processions down to the sea and fireworks are all part of the fun. Feast of the Fish (Festa del Pesce) happens last weekend in September in Positano to celebrate the end of summer. Head to Fornillo beach to join the pesce party goers. You’ve got to love Amalfi, when they have festivals like Sfogliatella Santa Rosa Festival which is to celebrate the eponymous pastry. It takes place in Conca dei Marini, a hilltop town on the coast between Amalfi and Furore. Head there during the first week of August to fill your face.

The Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics

(Palio delle Antiche Repubbliche Marinare) commemorates the rivalries of the four most famous maritime republics: Genoa, Pisa, Venice and Amalfi. They take turns to host it, so it is every four years in Amalfi, the next ones being 2020 and 2024. It falls sometime between end May and beginning July, so this is definitely a moveable feast.
